Natalie recommends... The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992)
Classic Dickens meets Jim Henson… The Muppets Christmas Carol is my ultimate festive film. It is simply so good on all levels; with everything you would expect and more. Big musical numbers, life lessons, and Kermit the frog.
Narrated by Rizzo the Rat and Gonzo the Great (all-time best muppet), the movie is fuzzy retelling of one miser who learns the true meaning of Christmas from three ghostly visitors.
Set against a half-human, half-muppet cast, Michael Caine makes a formidable Scrooge. Any temptation there may have been to play a more fun version of the villain (given the muppet-heavy circumstances) has been resisted, and instead he gives (arguably) the performance of a lifetime.
From its 1992 release, I’ve racked up the rewatches over the years, and every December The Muppets Christmas Carol is an important cinematic event at our house. If anything, it gets better with age, the mark of a real masterpiece.
Nicholle recommends… Die Hard (1988)
The return of festive movie season means one thing in my house… my family’s annual ‘Die Hard is/is not a Christmas film’ debate is passionately reignited. I maintain that Die Hard absolutely is a Christmas film and, as a lover of action films (even the cheesy ones), it is one of the best in the genre!
The plot is simple: John McClane (Bruce Willis) races against time to save his estranged wife who has been taken hostage on Christmas Eve by 12 terrorists, including their heinous leader who is played flawlessly by Alan Rickman. Seriously, Rickman’s Hans Gruber is the world champion of action movie villains!
Set almost solely in the fictional Nakatomi Plaza skyscraper, it’s jam packed with all of the good stuff—explosions, fist fights, shoot-outs and legendary one-liners. What’s not festive about that?
In the wise words of John McClane, “yippee-ki-yay!”
Laura recommends… That Christmas (2024)
For anyone looking for a new festive movie to add to their annual watchlist, look no further. Recently released on Netflix, ‘That Christmas’ is a heart-warming animation that follows a series of entwined tales of love, loneliness, family and friends.
The majority of the plot takes place in the fictional town of Wellington-on-Sea, where the residents must deal with a number of catastrophes including the worst snowstorm in history. Brian Cox voices Santa Claus but also takes on the role of narrator and his honest commentary on the events helps the audience to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas.
While ‘That Christmas’ has some brilliant comedic moments that make it a wonderful light-hearted festive film for the whole family, it’s so much more than that. These writers know how to pull at the heartstrings and there are multiple scenes that are sure to bring a tear to your eye.
Jake recommends… Gremlins (1984)
Some people might argue that Gremlins is not a Christmas movie, but it is, and those people are wrong. It’s a movie about responsibility, the resilience of Christmas spirit, and cute critters called mogwai that have the potential to transform into deadly anarchists known as gremlins. I will concede, perhaps, that it’s not a typical Christmas movie.
Our main character, Billy, receives an unusual Christmas gift from his father - a mogwai named Gizmo. Gizmo likes to spend his time singing and generally being adorable. But I’m just going to say it; Billy is not a responsible mogwai owner. There are only three rules to follow in order to properly care for a mogwai, and even though one of them doesn’t make any sense (it’s always ‘after midnight’) Billy almost immediately manages to break two of the rules on his own, and is swiftly tricked into breaking the final one. Thus unleashing a bad case of gremlins on the quiet town of Kingston Falls.
The only way to describe Gremlins is… it’s a lot of fun. Stressful, messy, potentially dangerous chaotic fun. And isn’t that what Christmas is really all about?
