Go on a journey this Halloween with this creepy tale from the OCOCO crypt — here’s what happens when virtual reality becomes a virtual nightmare…
Day 6
Nobody hears your screams here. Nobody sees the lump in your throat. Nobody feels a tremor as you pound your fists against the fourth wall, desperately trying to recross the border. I would know. I’ve tried everything to escape this suffocating existence, but here I am after six days. Still helpless. Still trapped.
I’m not the only player bound to this twisted game. This place is swarming with avatars, ghosts of other victims who, like I, were promised a golden ticket to freedom and instead gifted a headset and a death sentence, neatly tied together in a pixelated bow.
It didn’t start like this. There was a time when this warped metaverse was once bursting with vivid colour and innovation. Who wouldn’t trade the mundanity of everyday life for a virtual wonderland? You know you would too. It isn’t until you try to go home that the novelty wears off and anxiety creeps in.
When I first realised what was truly happening, panic swept over me with violent force. I clawed frantically at my eyes, trying to remove the shackle and end this nightmare, but it was no use. The headset did not budge. I can still feel its hardness against my fingertips, the cold plastic chills my skin, the edges chip my nails, but it does not move. It is simply there, blinding me from real life and chaining me to this virtual world.
My body may be physically locked in place but my mind is free to race, searching aimlessly for a way out. Yet everything I encounter is a lie, trapping me deeper and deeper in this maze. There is no fresh air to fill my lungs, no genuine food to cure my hunger, not one building brick with substance; only millions of hollow pixels that deceive and ensnare.
If I cannot break free, this headset may as well be a noose around my neck, chaffing my skin as it erases my existence. One day it will be all that’s left of me, a pathetic headstone marking my doomed fate. Still, I prey that relief will come tomorrow, hoping light will eventually cut through the darkness and I will see the world again as it once was. I could have saved myself from this torment if only I’d known the unspoken rule: if you go into the metaverse, make sure you know your way out.
